Electricity for even more: Decision-support tools for equitable & efficient roll-out of public charging

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 990 000
Project duration September 2023 - August 2025
Status Completed
Venture Transport and mobility services - FFI
Call Transport and mobility services - FFI - spring 2023

Important results from the project

The project increased knowledge about multi-dwelling households, their car ownership and future charging needs. A quantitative decision support with high geographical resolution was developed, qualitatively supplemented by perspectives such as business models, responsibilities, local factors and user preferences. An interactive web map was published, as well as a geospatial cost estimate for public charging infrastructure based on historical costs. Furthermore, a market analysis was carried out.

Expected long term effects

The project is expected to provide decision-makers in cities, municipalities, regions and authorities with a solid knowledge base, about a relatively unexplored target group, for future strategies and policy design for an efficient, equitable and needs-based expansion of public charging infrastructure. The project can also promote the need for increased research on a target group that constitutes approximately 50% of households and over 30% of car ownership – crucial for achieving climate goals.

Approach and implementation

RISE acted as project leader and coordinator. The core group included those who carried out the work (quantitative and qualitative analyses, project management, communication, etc) with funding from FFI, incl. RISE, Lindholmen Science Park and Power Circle. Three participating actors (Stockholm Stad, Strömstadsbyggen and Parkering Göteborg) contributed with local studies. Monthly meetings were held with the entire consortium to collect input on interim results, consisting of 13 partners.
