Purpose and goal
The project´s result is a validated UAV-based radar solution that integrates seamlessly into humanitarian survey operations.
Expected effects and result
In the humanitarian Land Release process, NextGenHOC targets the Non-Technical Survey (NTS) and Technical Survey (TS) stages, where time and resource savings are greatest. Current NTS methods, based on informant interviews and aerial photography, typically overestimate hazardous areas by several times, leading to unnecessary clearance of land that is not contaminated. TS teams then spend weeks or months manually sampling polygons with metal detectors, excavating large amounts of harmless debris.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will deliver a lightweight UAV-mounted radar system, NextGenHOC, capable of detecting and imaging landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) with previously unmatched precision. Its core innovation lies in the combination of ultra-wideband polarimetric radar modules (500 MHz–3 GHz), advanced imaging algorithms, and low-noise communication links, integrated into a modular sensor head weighing only 2–4 kg.
