Important results from the project

The aim of the project was to develop a cost-efficient production process for TriboNite to enable heat treatment combined with solid lubricant coating. Another goal of this project has been to optimize the process to come up with a competitive solution to phosphating in terms of hydraulic motor cylinder bore wear resistance. TriboNite has in this project been demonstrated in full scale equipment, the performance of the treatment has been verified and compared to phosphating by application testing and other benefits in terms of cost savings have been demonstrated.

Expected long term effects

TriboNite treated cylinder blocks have proven to show comparable performance in terms wear resistance of the cylinder bore/piston interface in Danfoss application tests as their current solution, phosphating. In addition to that, TriboNite has shown other benefits such as the possibility to be a more cost effective and sustainable solution compared to phosphating.

Approach and implementation

The process development has been performed in collaboration between ANS and Bodycote. ANS have been responsible for the development of the process chemistry and the properties of the coating. Bodycote have been responsible for the optimization of the heat treatment to ensure optimal performance combined with TriboNite. The work started by development of a prototype process which in a later stage was implemented in full-scale process equipment. The performance of TriboNite treated cylinder blocks have been evaluated in iterations by Danfoss application testing.
