Purpose and goal

To develop tailormade adsorbent materials (AM) based on nanoporous silicate for removal of hazardous chemicals known to have negative impact on indoor air quality and in refrigerators. The objectives are: To enhance the air quality for people living in urban areas by capturing gases such as SOx, H2S, NOx and VOC’s from the polluted air. To prolong the shelf life and the quality of fruits and vegetables stored in refrigerators by capturing ethylene gas which has negative impact on the produces ripening process.

Expected results and effects

The consortium has fulfilled its objectives to the large extent. SvAAB has developed AM with high potential for capturing the gases SOx, H2S, ethylene, form- and acetaldehyde. Regarding aldehydes, the material has ca 2.5 times better adsorption capacity and 15% better cost-performance than the best activated carbon. Results from ripening tests performed on bananas in refrigerators show an improvement shelf life by 25% in presence of our material. Arcelik is very interested to extend the collaboration with SvAAB and develop the material further and to make it market ready.

Planned approach and implementation

The projects implementation has succeeded due to the plan as defined. Filter cassettes with different figures were made by Akjel and sent to IVL and Arcelik. The cassettes were filled with AM’s made by SvAAB. Adsorption and desorption analysis of the filter materials as well as the pressure drop over the filter cassettes were performed by IVL. Arcelik conducted a series of test on bananas to determine their ripening characteristics using refrigerators equipped with analysis instruments. SvAAB has also conducted marketing research and had business meeting with potential customers.
