Important results from the project

The project aims to develop a transmission concept with unique performance. This should be suitable as foundation for further development into a complete product with an integrated electrical machine. The concept´s increased performance derives from the combination of high-performance steel from Ovako and the patented Belix® technology, which balances the gear forces internally in the system. The concept can be the basis for continued development of electric powertrains and adapted for specific vehicles and scalable up and down for various power ratings.

Expected long term effects

Calculations and simulations show that the set objectives regarding dimensions and weight for the concept were met. Other properties in the objective, such as efficiency and NVH are also considered to be fulfilled. The transmission is based on cylindrical gears in a layshaft design and is considered less complex in comparison with planetary gear systems. It allows better conditions for rational production. The simplicity of the concept in combination with its high performance can contribute to an increasing proportion of vehicle electrification.

Approach and implementation

The concept was developed using system analysis and calculations in GWJ Technologies software. The load collective for a A-class size vehicle was the dimensioning criteria. “Design For Manufacturing” has been applied in the design of gears and shafts. A manufacturing evaluation of the layshaft has been carried out by Leax. A commercially available electric machine has been chosen with regard to its power density, speed and integration with the gearbox as well as the external dimensions for the concept. The differential solution was provided by Winning BLW.
