Purpose and goal
FR-Woodfix will develop sustainable, water-based, leach resistant fire retardant (FR) treatments for solid wood products using two research themes: use of phosphate esters of inisotol and use of phosphorylated lignin derivatives. Work will focus on fixation within the wood ultrastructure after impregnation and determine the most effective phosphorus content loading versus product cost, creating technical solutions and new products for the timber construction sector.
Expected effects and result
The project will create and evaluate innovative, leach-resistant flame retardants suitable for initial use on wood and wood-based products, with potential for use in other markets. These will improve product performance without compromising the local environment.
Planned approach and implementation
Work will focus on ways to introduce inisotol phosphates and phosphorylated lignins as fire retardants. This will be done using impregnation methods and designing systems that can react with the wood components. The aim will be to create treatments that ca be easily fixed into the wood, their fixation being assessed in the work, along with the fire retardancy and effect on wood properties.
