Important results from the project
The goal, which has been achieved, was to create a cost-effective method for continuous monitoring of the physical properties of the heat using camera and simulation software. By analyzing various properties of the heat, deviations in the product due to roll wear can be detected. These measured deviations will then be used to update simulations that calculate the physical properties of the heat, such as speed, deformation rate and temperature profile, as well as the rolling mill forces.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in a follow-up project where all issues and needs will be addressed. This is expected to lead to major advances in monitoring and simulation of the rolling process and will provide a deeper understanding of how rolling affects materials. In the long run, this gives companies better opportunities to be flexible and more resource-efficient in a transition where processing such as rolling also has a clear role in the steel industry.
Approach and implementation
The project followed the approach where sensors and the development of how the simulation program should receive sensor data were studied in parallel. An understanding of how an implementation of sensors could be carried out was done. The scope of the activities developed during the course of the project, which led to an increase in intensity over time. This was a good working method and meant that the plan and goals could be followed without demarcations being made too early.
