DEFect prediCtiON for laser metal deposition of Ti-6Al-4V wire (DEFCON)

Reference number
Coordinator GKN AEROSPACE SWEDEN AB - Avd. 9634
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 739 764
Project duration November 2017 - December 2019
Status Completed
Venture National Aeronautical Research Program 7
Call 2017-02942-en

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project was to perform a pre-study around expansion of current thermal simulation models for AM to post process their results with a thermodynamic model for evaporation of Aluminum as well as a flow-simulation where a risk of inclusion of porosity can be calculated. A fully automatic process of post processing has not been realized within the framework of this project. Model for nucleation and growth of porosity is developed and work is currently being published.

Expected results and effects

The project has contributed to maintaining the leading position within the area of CWT (Computational Welding Mechanics) at LTU and has engaged several masters students in thesis work. The pre-study has also resulted in several learnings regarding what the challenges are for implementation of a fast and useful model for prediction of defects in AM material. Future research within this area will implement these learnings.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been executed according to the initial plan, with a clear breakdown of the project tasks. GKN was mainly responsible for coordination, reporting and planning as well as model validation and LTU was responsible for literature studies and development of the simulation model. Physical meetings at LTU and GKN as well as teleconference meetings between both parties ensured the progress of the project.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
