Decision support for order-driven planning of continuous casting and rolling at SSAB

Reference number
Coordinator Linköpings universitet - Matematiska institutionen
Funding from Vinnova SEK 278 000
Project duration December 2014 - May 2015
Status Completed
Venture Strategic innovation programme for process industrial IT and automation – PiiA

Purpose and goal

The academic party (Linköping University) has gain valuable insights in the complex planning situation at SSAB. An overview of their order-driven production planning problems has resulted in several sub-problems suitable for mathematical modelling and optimization techniques.

Results and expected effects

In accordance with the stated expectations, several self-contained sub-problems have been identified. For one of them, the daily planning problem for the continuous caster in Luleå, we have developed and implemented an optimization model, with promising results. The findings throughout the project have been collected in a technical report, which contains mathematical optimization models, implementation details and discussions (restrictions/shortcomings of the models). This report is an excellent basis for a planned journal publication.

Approach and implementation

The proposed working plan and organization for the project has been successful. After the initial literature study, the involved parties have had continuous correspondence and regular video call meetings 1-2 times each month. Further, the academic party (Nils-Hassan) has visited SSAB:s facilities in Borlänge and Luleå to conduct physical meetings and to get a better understanding of the working environment. Both parties are interested in a continuation of the project, and discussions are in progress on how to realize future cooperation.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
