Important results from the project
The project achieved its goals by bringing together key actors, mapping knowledge, and analyzing needs related to PFAS in Sweden’s water resources. Through a case study of Lake Mälaren and broad collaboration, concrete development needs were identified. A key added result was the concept of PFAS:Lab Mälaren, a future transition lab for long-term, systematic PFAS management. The project also laid a strong foundation for continued national mobilization.
Expected long term effects
The project is expected to contribute to a more sustainable and systematic approach to PFAS management in Sweden’s water resources. In the long term, this includes strengthened collaboration between authorities, municipalities, industry and research, improved governance, and more targeted, resource-efficient measures. Continued work with PFAS:Lab Mälaren enables solution implementation, protection of drinking water, and ecosystem restoration.
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out as planned through four work packages: knowledge gathering, synthesis, case study, and future planning. Activities were relevant and aligned with project goals. The timeline was followed, and no major external obstacles occurred. Collaboration worked very well with strong engagement from all partners. A positive outcome was the strong interest from external stakeholders, which strengthened the project´s legitimacy and future potential.
