Purpose and goal
The project applies service design and behavioral science to explore why public transport for commuting to Karlstad is underused and what factors can increase sustainable travel. Through co-creation between users, the municipality, schools and the transport authority, we identify needs and barriers, analyze behaviors and drivers, and develop solutions that strengthen public transport’s appeal and support sustainable everyday mobility.
Expected effects and result
The project analyzes how students and parents organize daily travel and which factors promote or hinder sustainable mobility, with focus on gender and sociodemographic differences. Using service design, we develop concepts, prototypes and visualizations to integrate school transport, public transit and other modes. Results provide a basis for inclusive policy development, stronger collaboration, and measures that advance equality and increase public transport’s appeal.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will run in four phases: initiation and ethical review (2025–26), insights collection and travel behavior analysis via the Behaviour Change Wheel (spring 2026), concept development with prototypes and visualizations (autumn 2026), and dissemination through reports, articles, and networks (spring 2027). The budget is ~4 MSEK, mainly for staff, data collection, service design, and dissemination.
