Important results from the project
The project aimed to catalyze system transforming solutions for the urban climate transition in Bogotá, Colombia; Bristol, United Kingdom; Curitiba, Brazil; and Makindye Ssabagabo, Uganda. The missions defined were - deliver low-carbon, affordable homes in Bristol and Makindye Ssabagabo, create zero-carbon neighbourhoods in Curitiba and reduce freight emissions in Bogotá. The project contributed to discourse on innovation challenges, system demonstrators and people-centered smart cities.
Expected long term effects
The project initiated urban climate-neutral and smart system demonstrators. In Bogota, the Urban Zones for Better Air policy will address freight emissions. In Bristol, a Playbook was developed to scale the model of a 29-house demonstrator. In Curitiba, a committee works to expand the system demonstrator from an urban garden to integrated solutions for zero-carbon neighbourhoods. In Makindye Ssabagabo, a concept for low-carbon affordable housing development is raising funds for implementation.
Approach and implementation
Centered on the challenges defined by the cities, the project led by Viable Cities & UN-Habitat, launched an international open innovation competition. 45 finalists were selected from 179 applications received across the four cities. With coaching and collaboration, finalists formed teams and submitted joint proposals to the cities. Four winning teams, Green Routes, Thriving Places, Green Community Cities and Smart Neighborhoods, were awarded up to €100,000 each to plan a system demonstrator.
