Call Impact Innovation: The interaction between society and industry - Swedish Metals and Minerals

Purpose and goal

To increase the general public´s interest for the mineral industry and related research and to: - more efficiently use the drill cores that are extracted from the rock, in exploration and mining - encourage domestic innovative measurement techniques and strengthen the Swedish mineral industry´s competitiveness. - publish the study and all data with open access.

Expected effects and result

A globally accessible web based platform for citizen science, where users engaged in classification of x-ray tomographic images of rock structures. Increased interest from the general public for the mineral and mining industry and related research. Long term, increased use of domestic technique for generation and analysis of three dimensional x-ray tomographic data within related industry. Increased interest from school children in education and later, local companies, in related fields.

Planned approach and implementation

Following initial requirement capture, various predetermined classes of structures and textures are defined, that clearly are seen in 3D with the help of x-ray tomography. A web site is developed that enables anyone to perform the classification. When the web site has been up for a longer period of time, and actively been marketed by many of the project partners within their respective networks, all data and all classifications will be published in a scientific journal.
