Project duration October 2014 - December 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to develop business models for city logistics as a basis for the design and decision to introduce city logistics systems and to operate such systems over time. The models describe roles and economic conditions for municipalities, carriers, merchants, etc. which are involved in city logistics. This has been done through several parallel subprojects that individually and together represents new and valuable knowledge.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in a practically oriented manual (a handbook) for the development of business models for city logistics, as well as a series of academic publications that together cover the breadth that the project represents. Results has been published in academic journals and in magazines and has been presented at Swedish and international conferences. The results will contribute to the development of more effective city logistics, which are better placed to be economically viable over time.

Planned approach and implementation

We have analyzed theories mainly on business models and cost allocation models. A number of case studies have been conducted on Swedish and European city logistics solutions. These have been supplemented with data collection with primary and secondary data from doctoral students as well as master of science projects to further broaden the empirical data. We have had meetings with our reference and steering group. We have continuously communicated our results at academic conferences and in a seminar with municipalities that are in the process of introducing or city logistics.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
