Purpose and goal

This project aims to develop “BioSmart fertilizers” using hyper-modified microorganisms able to sense soil and crop conditions and deliver targeted treatments. These microbes will address nutrient limitations, pollutants and pathogens, supporting sustainable crop growth. Applying advanced synthetic biology tools, the project aims to reshape agriculture by reducing environmental impacts and ensuring food security. The feasibility stage focuses on building a multidisciplinary research consortium.

Expected effects and result

The project’s long-term results include developing a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers, reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint, and improving global food security. In the short term, this feasibility stage focuses on establishing a multidisciplinary scientific consortium with complementary expertise, forming a strong foundation to advance the envisioned technology and address the challenges of modern agriculture.

Planned approach and implementation

The project corresponds to a feasibility stage to explore the potential of "BioSmart fertilizers" from hyper-modified microorganisms. This phase focuses on reviewing existing technologies, identifying scientific challenges, and building a multidisciplinary research consortium. This new consortium will develop a scientific roadmap for technology development and integrate discussions with stakeholders, such as policy makers and potential end users, to evaluate its potential application.
