Purpose and goal
The purpose of the project is to stop the spread of microplastics from artificial turf fields into nature and our watercourses. The goal is to develop a forest based biodegradable performance infill to be used in artificial turf fields for soccer.
Expected results and effects
If the hypothesis can be validated, it gives potential for a revolutionary development for the production of future artificial turf fields. Expected results make it possible to remove today´s environmentally harmful plastics from football fields. For the artificial turf industry, the result tells that the entire production chain from raw material to ready-made artificial turf field needs to be re-designed.
Planned approach and implementation
The hypothesis is to develop two material tracks, a lignin-based granulate and one that is a biocomposite where residues from forest management is an important ingredient. In this work, the project will use the consortium´s combined expertise from raw material to market in order to provide a comprehensive picture of the material performance and ability to meet market requirements in accordance with FIFA Quality Pro and FIFA Quality, The project is expected to produce enough material to test at least two different materials as described above on a limited scale.
