BioComposites - Circularity and Coordination

Reference number
Coordinator RISE INNVENTIA AB - RISE Bioekonomi
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 200 000
Project duration July 2017 - October 2021
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The BioInnovation Innovation Project BioComposites contributed to sustainability goals by fostering the leap from small-scale investigation to large-scale demonstration of bio-based composites. Industrially relevant demonstrators had a performance tailored to six market segments: paper-based bottles, high-performance bio-based sheet moulded compounds for vehicle components, novel prosthetics, accessories, compression-moulded furniture and interiors components. 20 of 24 partners were from industry. A framework for circular business models was investigated.

Expected results and effects

BioComposites Circularity & Coordination organised workshops where, among others, we invited experts from the aviation industry to learn about how they work with circularity. A framework for circular materials and circular business models put the project’s demonstrators in context. The presentation at the Cirucular Materials conference, an article, a meeting with Swedens delegation for circular economy and participation in online circular economy courses has strengthened Sweden’s position in a biobased and circular economy. The project contributed to 6 of 17 SDGs.

Planned approach and implementation

The BioComposites Circularity & Coordination project had five main activities, focusing on circularity, societal value, strategic learning, communication, and coordination. This was an efficient structure to ensure that the coordination delivered value to the partners in the subprojects. The 3,5-year timeline was extended due to Covid-19 to a total of 4,3 years. The most difficult result was the joint guidelines as it was difficult to meet with the partners in the subprojects while restrictions were in place, each partner having to deal with their own difficulties and delays.
