Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 000 000
Project duration April 2013 - July 2015
Status Completed

Important results from the project

The objective of the project has been to increase the knowledge and experience in automatic inspection of welds in hard to reach areas with the aim to be able to inspect hidden welds in order to ensure reliable products. All partners have through the project substantially increased their knowledge and experience within the field and as one result a demonstrator have been build. The demonstrator show the possibility to use thermography for automatic inspection of surface defects in welds.

Expected long term effects

The project has shown that by using system based on thermography and continuous lases light, it is possible to build an automatic inspection cell for inspection of hidden welds. The project was expected to contribute to the growth of GKN Aerospace Sweden AB and to formation of new SMEs with connection to University West. The contribution to the development of GKN is to early to state, but during 2015 a SME, called Termospect AB with the aim to operate in the NDT area, was started.

Approach and implementation

The project has been a part of a bilateral AirTN-project and been conducted in close cooperation between the two Swedish and two Spanish partners. All activities have been followed up at regular project meetings. University West has been the project coordinator and a steering committee with representatives from app partners has made all decisions. The cooperation has worked very well and all partners have taken responsibility of the entire project and supported all partners with time and competence if needed.
