Purpose and goal
The goal of the project was to investigate the requirements for Hydroforming Design Light (HDL) to become an approved subcontractor to GKN Aerospace. HDL and GKN have approved the report and believes that the goal of the project is achieved. The process at HDL to become a subcontractor to GKN Aerospace is immediately started. It is a long journey that requires both great technical skills and a thorough quality work.
Results and expected effects
The result is that HDL now has a decision basis that enables them to take a realistic decision whether they want to work to become a subcontractor to GKN Aerospace or not. There will be several effects. HDL needs to invest considerable sums in technical verification and quality certification to meet both technical and quality requirements. The result is great potential to do business with GKN Aerospace bringing growth and new expertise in to the company. The job opportunities will be safer and eventually possibly increase. GKN Aerospace will have a new qualified Swedish subcontractor.
Approach and implementation
Initially a meeting took place with the purchase department of GKN Aerospace. Questions about the quality system of HDL were sent in advance before the visit of Swerea IVF, in order to be used as a basis for the initial discussion. The visit at HDL began with a tour of the workshop. The AS9100C was examined in detail. Solely the points that differ in the AS9100 and ISO 9001: 2008 were reviewed and commented upon in regard to whether they meet the requirement of today, or whether they are working on it. A color- coding was used to more easily get an overview of the relatively wide standard.
