Important results from the project

A flexible modular ballistic protection solution has been developed that can support its own weight without the aid of adhesive. However, adhesive can be used in the joints and act as shock absorbers. The solution was shown to withstand ballistic particles whose size corresponds to the smallest size of simulated shrapnel. However, Vibenite 130 did not withstand high-energy ballistic particles such as more powerful ammunition at the current stage of material development.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, the results are expected to contribute to the integration of alternative ballistic protection for areas that cannot be protected today. This is done using the additive manufacturing method that contributes to flexibility and adaptation of design in combination with the newly developed material Vibenite 130. Vibenite 130 is also expected to be integrated in other civilian areas for wear components that require higher toughness, where conventional tool steel is used today.

Approach and implementation

Technical development of module design, joining and material took place in parallel with training in defense industry. The approach worked well, but the collaboration with the defense industry and authorities took longer than expected. The expectation of getting a clear picture of requirements and needs analysis was not met, which made the development of the product more difficult. The project was given a more civilian focus focused on the concept, to later be measured against military needs.
