Important results from the project

Our vision, to become a global player in the education, research and development of additively manufactured materials and components for life science, was fulfilled, as confirmed by the external evaluation in 2024. This was made possible by high-impact research projects, summer schools, etc., in close collaboration with healthcare and industrial partners. An important spin-off result is national Research Technology Platform WISE Additive, enabling open access to cutting-edge AM infrastructure.

Expected long term effects

Future excellent research in AM is facilitated by a well-developed environment for education, research and collaboration, including high-quality infrastructure. This is available nationally. In the future, our results may provide 3D-printed implants, which not only fit the patient perfectly geometrically, but also reduce complications through the possibility of printable, degradable materials that are replaced by the body´s own tissue over time, thereby eliminating the risk of infection.

Approach and implementation

The centre involved a broad spectrum of research projects at the start. This meant many different types of partners. Our breadth was commended by our external advisory board for the general knowledge development, the downside was the lack of critical mass for each specific topic. The collaboration was smooth. In phase 2, the projects are more focused, but due to the multidisciplinary topic, and aiming to also include the full value chain, there are still many partners.
