Purpose and goal

The project aims to enhance human-machine interaction in remote drilling operations through multi-modal feedback through sound, vibration and haptics. The goals are to improve operators´ situational awareness, safety, ergonomics and energy efficiency in increasingly automated and remote environments. By applying agile, user-centered methods, a prototype is developed to evaluate and validate appropriate feedback to contribute to an attractive, sustainable and productive work environment.

Expected effects and result

The development of new methodology, a prototype and guidelines for multi-modal feedback to strengthen human-machine interaction for remotely controlled and automated drilling. Expected effects are increased productivity, safety, ergonomics and energy efficiency, and a more attractive and inclusive work environment. The project contributes to sustainable technology development and strengthens the competitiveness of the Swedish mining industry, leading to new knowledge and innovations

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented using agile, user-centered methods and iterative design sprints. Sound, vibration and haptic signals are collected from machines in the Björkdal mine, processed and prototype signals are tested in advanced simulators at Epiroc. Operators are involved through interviews, tests and evaluations to ensure relevance and usability. The results are continuously analyzed and lead to validated interfaces, guidelines and a validated prototype for efficient remote control.
