A nationwide conference for the bio-making movement in Sweden

Reference number
Coordinator BioNyfiken
Funding from Vinnova SEK 80 000
Project duration October 2015 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

To arrange Sweden´s first BioMaker conference. It should be a one-day conference and the participants should not only come from the biohacker sphere. We wanted to create an event as diverse as the biohackermovment itself. From cyborgs to food supplements. The aim was to get 70 participants including presenters. There were in the end over 120 participants (more on the waiting list) and around 20 presenters. The conference program consisted of three parts namely short inspirational presentations, unconference and workshops.

Expected results and effects

The result was well over expectations because the number of participants were nearly double what we hoped and planned for (120 compared to 70). The participants background varied from medical doctors to grinders, scientists to philosophers and lawyers. Participating companies did not have to pay a fee, but needed to have some connection to the biohacking movement. We received a lot of positive feedback from the participants.

Planned approach and implementation

BioNyfiken is a non-profit organisation where all work is performed in the members´ spare time. That said, we were very satisfied with the outcome of the conference. There was a good mix between lectures in the morning and more hands on in the after-noon which most participants were very happy with. As a first time organizer of an event this big, we noticed some small things that could be improved the next time.
