Radical innovation
To meet tomorrow's needs, innovative solutions are needed. Incremental improvements are not always enough when we face complex challenges in areas such as climate, security and health. Radical innovations have the potential to revolutionize society and industries and tackle global problems with completely new approaches. That is why Vinnova is investing in radical innovation to accelerate groundbreaking developments that can make a big difference.
What is radical innovation?
Radical innovation means breaking with the old and creating something completely new. It's about creating completely new solutions that change how we live, work or solve major societal challenges. It's not about improving what we already have, but finding something that can open doors we didn't know existed. Unlike incremental improvements, radical innovation requires us to rethink from the ground up.
Examples of radical innovation
- Streaming technology: When music and film moved from physical media to digital streaming, not only did business models change, but also how we consume culture.
- 3D printing: The ability to “print” physical objects has created a new manufacturing paradigm. The technology opens up decentralized production and customized solutions in a way that was not previously possible.
What is the difference to incremental innovation?
Incremental innovation improves and develops what already exists, such as faster batteries or more efficient processes. Radical innovation, on the other hand, introduces something completely new that changes the playing field and breaks with the prevailing system or paradigm.
Why is Vinnova investing in radical innovation?
Radical innovation can create entirely new markets, change business models and contribute to solutions that affect how we live and work. It has potential to tackle global challenges such as climate change, health and security while strengthening Sweden's competitiveness. By supporting bold ideas that might otherwise not become reality, we create the conditions for new technology areas and companies to emerge and become competitive globally. We strengthen the competitiveness of Sweden and Europe. To accelerate development, Vinnova invests in initiatives that make a difference. One example is the challenge-driven the call for proposals Drönarsvärm, where we finance six project that will contribute to a safer and more resilient society with drone technology. We also work internationally to open up opportunities for Swedish actors to take part in and contribute to the most advanced ideas globally through our partnership with the German innovation authority SPRIN-D.
