Important results from the project
The project simulated implementations of SAVs and developed a mobility hub typology. It includes the typical mobhub where mobility services such as car and bike sharing are clustered in public spaces. The Munich model creates a public space with shared mobility, sometimes without connection to public transport. The Paris model focuses on micromobility parking. The Swedish model converts garages into a "mobility space" with mobility services. The San Francisco model is based on autonomous taxis.
Expected long term effects
The potential to implement SAVs and mobility hubs is high. The mobility hubs can contribute to better integration of station areas with shared mobility services. There are many parking facilities available for upgrading too. SAVs and robotaxi can have a major impact also if the legislation on autonomous vehicles changes. Robotaxi can replace taxis and public transport in sparsely populated areas. However, more research is needed on their transport efficiency and environmental impact.
Approach and implementation
The project developed as planned. The simulation study and conceptualization of the mobhub typology took a little more time than expected, but the collaboration worked excellently. We had a Swedish and an American workshop with local actors who were very interested in SAVs, robotaxi and TOD.
