Important results from the project
This project is a part of a Eureka project with the aim to reduce the risk of viral contagion from airborne transmission of pathogens within building spaces. This project provided information on strategies for operation of ventilation in buildings and developed a method for evaluation of the performance of ventilation to reduce the risk of airborne infection spread.
Expected long term effects
Results from this project can be used in operation- and control strategies for ventilation systems to reduce the spread of infection from airborne pathogens in buildings. Results from the project included 1) mapping of current standards and guidelines 2) test methods (lab and field) for evaluation of ventilation systems and air purification systems ability to reduce the risk of virus spread in buildings. 3) basis for future guidelines and recommendations.
Approach and implementation
A method for evaluating ventilation and air cleaner performance on airborne virus prevention/control was developed. Different ventilation designs, set-ups and use of portable air cleaner was evaluated in laboratory. Technical status and non-technical issues with focus on elderly care homes were gathered, and possible adaption measures were suggested. Results from the project can be used as input to guidelines and recommendation regarding design and operation of ventilation in buildings.
