Important results from the project
The Mumin project has been running during 2016, with the aim to facilitate to kids with severe impairments to be able to play instruments and create music. We have been using electronic instruments and controls in order to adapt to the users abilities. The goal has been that every child should enjoy their activity, and also get the feeling of ´I can´. We consider these goals as reached, with great success. The children are very eager to play, and have at several occasions also indicated that they want to play by themselves.
Expected long term effects
After this year we have now, within the time frame of the project, managed to create a stable studio environment, which is adapted to children with a large number of impairments. This studio is now ready to be implemented as apedagogik/therapeutic product, which is somthing we hope to be able to do in 2017. The children who have had access to this form of music have fun playing, as expected, and do not want to cease playing at the end of a session (30 min). They have also developed a pride in their music, clearly showing that they do not want to receive any help from teachers or assistants.
Approach and implementation
The project has mostly used direct studies of the children´s interaction with the instruments, combined with an analysis of the material collected through video recordings and written notes. The studies have been made during one day per week, during the whole year 2016, apart from during the summer vacations, when the school has been closed. Each child has been given 25 - 30 minutes of individual time. The children are placed in front of the studio and can choose the instrument they want. During their playing we do not interact, more than, e.g., counter spastic movements or wipe their mouths.
