Important results from the project

A plan was produced to strengthen the circular economy in Guleskärs Hamn with focus on strengthened food self-sufficiency and increased landing of pelagic fish in Sweden. The plan includes industrial and social symbiosis, robust energy supply, sustainable logistics, resource optimization and port optimization. During the work, the prerequisites for the port´s expansion and cooperation between the relevant parties were clarified. Possible techniques and solutions for increased sustainability were mapped. Development linked to increased attractiveness was analysed.

Expected long term effects

Basis for an implementation plan to strengthen Guleskärs Hamns´s potential for increased self-sufficiency includes sustainable logistics solutions, mapping of possible symbiosis, development of energy collaboration, and requirements for business establishment in the area. Additional business models have been identified. A DCO company has been registered. New collaboration lasting platforms for collaboration between the municipality, civil society and private actors. The project has also initiated increased focus on the marine environment in the port.

Approach and implementation

The fact that we used an interdisciplinary approach with a wide range of experts was crucial to achieving results as the system is complex. Creating consensus between companies, the municipality´s officials and elected officials is more time-consuming than we initially anticipated. Mapping of traffic, environmental monitoring and energy needs were combined with focus groups. Flexibility characterized the work, which allowed adjustments to schedules. Follow-up and systematic evaluation ensured that project goals were met. Documentation of lessons learned enables future use.
