Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 10 148 000
Project duration June 2025 - May 2028
Status Ongoing
Venture Accelerate - FFI
Call FFI Accelerera the transition to sustainable road transport - spring 2025

Purpose and goal

ELMAS´s goal is to deliver new data on load capacity and energy consumption for different vehicle types, both with combustion engines and electric, in relation to current production routes on BK2 and BK1 roads with 3, 4, and 5-axle vehicles, through field trials in real environments in urban areas in Skåne. ELMAS is a continuation project that tackles the challenges of transitioning to sustainable freight transport in cities within the segment of heavy mass transport in construction projects.

Expected effects and result

By taking a comprehensive approach to regulations, policy, business models, changes in behavior and culture, combined with infrastructure issues (both physical and digital) as well as technological development, there is great potential for societal benefit if the implementation of electrified HCT vehicles for mass transport can be accelerated. Previous results have shown that traffic work can be reduced by 38-50% depending on vehicle combination, and CO2 emissions decrease by up to 40%

Planned approach and implementation

ELMAS is based on users and their needs, as well as requirements from municipalities and industries. The project is coordinated by RISE and is organized in six different work packages: AP1 includes Project Management and Communication, AP2 Technology and Regulatory Development, led by Volvo, AP3 Traffic Safety & Road wear led by VTI. AP4 Logistics, System Effects led by RISE. AP5 System Demonstrators with two to three pilots, led by Volvo, AP6 Knowledge Exchange & Dissemination, led by CLOSER.
