Digital impedance bridge (DIMP)

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 860 000
Project duration June 2025 - October 2026
Status Ongoing

Purpose and goal

The project aims to develop a digital impedance bridge for 4-port impedance standards. This bridge will complement the traditional impedance bridges used at Riksmätplatsen today, which are based on inductive voltage dividers. The traditional bridges are very accurate, but work best in a fairly narrow frequency range, approximately 400 Hz – 10 kHz. The digital bridge extends the frequency range both downwards to the mHz range and upwards to the MHz range, and is very suitable for automation.

Expected effects and result

The new bridge will be an important resource for Riksmätplatsen, both for developing new calibration services for customers in industry and at government agencies, and for participating in future European research projects. The results may lead to improvements in many application areas where impedance measurement is an important part, such as diagnosis and monitoring of batteries and power grids, many types of impedance based sensors, development of semiconductor circuits and electronics.

Planned approach and implementation

A preliminary test of the concept has already been successfully completed. Q3-Q4 2025: Construction of electronics. Development of measurement program and method. Preliminary uncertainty analysis. Comparison with traditional impedance bridge. Q1-Q2 2026: Extended abstract sent to CPEM. Evaluation of the bridge in a wide frequency range and with different impedances. Detailed uncertainty analysis. Q3-Q4 2026: Full-length article to CPEM. Presentation of the results at CPEM.
