Important results from the project

The goals we set from the start were met and a prototype Mg alloy spinal implant was designed and produced using topology optimization and its function was verified in mechanical tests. Inossia AB, which is active in the commercialization of new products for an aging spine, strove to capture and retain Salim Ghandours´s excellence in the field and Salim now has a permanent position with the company.

Expected long term effects

The project is within Inossia AB´s competence and will provide a good start for potential commercialization in the long term. Fusion implants made of Mg alloys could revolutionize fusion surgery, but also form the starting point for solutions for other surgeries such as enabling the healing of large complex bone defects, eliminating revision surgery and enabling treatment of growing individuals. This would constitute a true paradigm shift in the orthopedic and spine industry.

Approach and implementation

The project was organized into four work packages, each focusing on specific aspects of the development process while allowing for overlapping activities and continuous progress. WP1. Project management (Dr Nilsson) WP2. Degradable fusion cage optimization (Mr Ghandour) WP3. Additive manufacturing process optimization (Mr Ghandour) WP4:) Mechanical validation (Mr Ghandour) Alla samples were successfully tested within the original project timeframe.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
