Important results from the project
The purpose of the project was to revise the Wireless @ KTH´s strategy and adapted it to a greater commitment to innovation and small and medium sized companies in the wireless communications industry. As a result of the project, Wireless @ KTH´s work today focuses on three areas: ´Research´, ´Network´ and ´innovation´, and has more than thirty new partners, participating in a variety of projects, and a local network for small and medium sized enterprises.
Expected long term effects
Together with 29 international players, the center has been actively involved in the EU FP7 projects ´Metis´ which focuses on 5G and ´5 GrEEn´ a project with a focus on energy efficiency. Research during the period resulted in 17 journal articles, 73 conference papers, three PhD and two licentiate theses. During the period, the center also conducted 18 projects with 20 different ´project partners´, of which 10 of these are small and medium enterprises. Some key results from these projects have been: a new antenna product, a new start-up company, two patents, and a contribution to ETSI.
Approach and implementation
The wireless communication industry is under constant transformation. Wireless@KTH´s role in the innovation system must therefore be constantly changing. During the center´s first 10 years the business has mainly been focused on its main partners: Ericsson and TeliaSonera. However, today, more of the development of new technologies and services is happening within clusters of small and medium enterprises SME. In this project, Wireless@KTH has successfully found tools to actively support the technology and skills transfer between EU research and local SME.
