Important results from the project
The goal of designing and producing an antenna with an optimized array for 4D radar has been achieved. The project has designed an antenna that meets the partners requirements, which has been demonstrated through simulations and verification of a manufactured antenna.
The antenna design challenged Gapwave´s mechanical design requirements, but after further process development, the antenna could be manufactured, showing promising prospects for future industrialization.
Expected long term effects
Through additional sensor tests of Gapwave´s antenna Waymo will now be comparing the performance of MLW-antennas to other antenna technologies. This fall, Waymo is to set the roadmap of development of advanced high-precision radar.
The project has shown that Gapwaves MLW technology has a unique opportunity to deliver high antenna performance with good manufacturability, which provides good opportunities for the implementation of MLW antennas in self-driving vehicles in the future.
Approach and implementation
The project followed Gapwave´s standard process for a development projects, in collaboration with Waymo. Close contact with Waymo ensured that the right priorities were set in the antenna design and that the test antenna could be adapted to the current PCB and MMIC.
Somewhat longer time was required for the antenna design due to extensive optimization of the design. However, overall delays was mitigated by close collaboration with suppliers to achieve faster delivery times.
