Purpose and goal

The purpose of the feasibility study has been to investigate the differences between different electric bicycles, understand how they are used and roughly understand the types of accidents that occur with this microtransport solution. Based on this, we have developed a soft test target which can be used by the industry to develop their systems to detect and classify this type of object that has become common in our traffic environment. Behaviors and types of accidents are similar to bicyclists and it should be possible to use the same test methods as those that are used within Euro NCAP.

Expected results and effects

A soft test target for electric scooters has been developed at prototype level that can be used by the automotive industry to develop their systems to be able to detect and classify this type of object that has been in our traffic environment for a number of years. The scenarios for electric cyclists are similar to those for cyclists, therefore it should be possible to assume that the same test methods can be used as those against cyclists, such as those used within Euro NCAP.

Planned approach and implementation

An analysis of differences between different sizes of electric bicycles has been carried out where it has been established that there are small differences in reflection properties on the different sizes. The electric scooters have been measured as a reference for the development of a soft electric scooter target. The prototype has been measured and the construction has been iterated until a solution with reflection properties has been reached that is as similar to a real electric scooter as possible.
