Venture Test beds for society´s challenges

Purpose and goal

Virtual Gothenburg Lab is a test bed with the aim of developing the usability of the City of Gothenburg´s digital twin Virtuella Göteborg. The test bed is established at Visual Arena and includes methodology, technology and data for addressing societal challenges where the digital twin can be a new meeting place for collaboration, understanding and insights. With the goal of starting from the city´s needs, the test bed has created five pilot tests that highlight both the possibilities and challenges of using digital twins for cities and regions. It´s a place where needs meet solutions.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in the establishment of a test bed at Visual Arena, Lindholmen Science Park, for digital twins with focus on cities and regions. The test bed´s location within a neutral and non-profit arena provides an accessible meeting place for actors with an interest in both technology and development processes. The location also provides access to Visual Arena´s existing physical environment with good opportunities for meetings, administrative support and advanced technology. The desired result with an open and inclusive test bed is fulfilled with the chosen solution.

Planned approach and implementation

Initially in the project, a small test was done to visualize torrential rain to begin to define a working methodology. Thereafter, the test bed was developed based on thematic sprints to better understand how the test bed could work. After the sprints, the work was deepened to final results. The pilot tests were conducted in two rounds with an intermediate evaluation and analysis. The tests were based on the methodology in the Innovation Guide. The innovation guide is produced by Sweden´s municipalities and regions (SKR) and is used within the city of Gothenburg for innovation.
