Validering för Tillämpning at Karolinska Institutet 2018-2019

Reference number
Coordinator Karolinska Institutet Innovations AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 16 431 000
Project duration December 2017 - October 2022
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the VFT funds is to validate the projects´ potential for application (either via commercialization or utilization in another way) and to increase their degree of maturity for continued commercialization / utilization. The goal is for about 30 projects to be validated annually and promising projects are given the opportunity to develop further towards utilization either commercially or utilization in another way. During the project period, 163 projects have received support for validation. Of validated projects, 63 have formed companies.

Expected results and effects

During the project period, 163 projects have received support for validation. Of validated projects, 63 have formed companies. We see the effect of an increased interest in utilization, which is visible through an increased influx of project ideas and the formation of new companies. Several of these companies after VFT received investments and a few of these took important steps towards the market.

Planned approach and implementation

Coaching and advice from KI Innovation´s coaches and external experts is offered to validate the ideas in the projects. The results of the work show that support with intellectual property rights is the most common activity since patents are needed as a basis for making the projects investable. Legal advice, regulatory advice and business development are other validation activities that build value in the projects. We see the need to continuously seek discussion and feedback from investors about which validation activities contribute the most in creating value.
