Purpose and goal

An examination couch with built-in heat and the same comfort as the previously developed gender neutral pelvic examination chair (Oscar Medtech Gyn- & Urologistol 720), has been constructed and is evaluated on patients undergoing abdominal ultrasound examinations. The possibility of adding easy accessible foot plates has been requested if a pelvic examination would be needed without having to move the patient. This construction has been added to the examination couch and thereby the concept can be of benefit for many patients.

Expected results and effects

An examination couch with high comfort and built-in heat in the upholster is of great importance for all patients and especially for those with reduced mobility and pain. During investigations of e.g. the abdomen with ultrasound, the patients need to be able to lie without moving. This is even more important if tissue samples are taken, which is feasible if the patient is in a comfortable recumbent position. Irrespective of what investigation will be carried out, the same examination couch can be used and when needed changed to a pelvic examination chair without moving the patient.

Planned approach and implementation

The challenge has been to construct a combination of a comfortable examination couch where pelvic examinations also easily can be carried out. The examination couch has been constructed and an evaluation is ongoing with questionnaires. The 9 parameters evaluated have so far given an average assessment 4.7 on a 5-degree scale. The multifunctional examination bed with built-in heat in the upholster could in the future become a standard concept: irrespective of what type of examination will be carried out, the same couch can be used and when needed changed into a pelvic examination chair.
