Important results from the project
The project achieved its aim of developing research-based methods for how school buildings can contribute to social values through co-production between architecture, educational practice and research. However, due to construction delays, digital safety systems could not be tested in a completed building. Instead, the project delivered more extensively than planned through a combination of evaluation methods and workshops, revised functional programs, conference papers and research publications.
Expected long term effects
The project provides a basis for the continued development of school building processes through research-based planning methods and forms for involving different types of functions and competencies. The results can serve as analytical support in early stages to highlight goal conflicts, risks and pedagogical considerations, and contribute to discussions about the school´s professional role in shaping future learning environments.
Approach and implementation
The project was conducted through a national webinar aimed at mapping practices and perspectives, study visits to schools in Helsinki focusing on social values and safety, generative and analytical workshops, staff surveys, pedagogical and virtual walkthroughs, and a research-based synthesis with municipal staff, property owners, and architects. Delays in the construction project affected the timeline but enabled deeper analysis, comparative reflection, and research publications.
