Purpose and goal

The project´s objective is to create a more complete database of significant Swedish innovations and through the material contribute with evidence for evidence-based innovation policy. First, the project will continue to expand the SWINNO database over time and in scope. Second, the project aims to contribute to strategic policy areas for VINNOVA by providing research data on the development of Swedish innovations over time, innovation journeys, their driving forces as well as the significance of innovation (ex ante and ex post).

Expected results and effects

The database will be expanded backwards in time and in scope and published annually. A evaluation of the methodology, based on company interviews and additional information (eg patents) will provide guidance on the method´s advantages and disadvantages and contribute to discussions on innovation indicators. Research based on the database and supplementary sources will increase our understanding of Swedish innovation journeys. The database, together research based on the same, will thus be able to serve as an important tool for evidence-based policy.

Planned approach and implementation

The project will continue to expand the SWINNO database over time and in scope. The database is updated and made publicly available annually during the project. A core of SWINNO expands back to the late 19th century. In addition, the database will be expanded to cover environmental, recycling and energy journals. The research section has as aim to increase knowledge about the longitudinal aspects of Swedish innovations, covering both the period before and after the innovations were commercialized.
