Important results from the project

The EU project SUNRISE ”Solar Energy for a Circular Economy” was selected as one of six Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs) in the call FET FLAGSHIP-CSA 2018. SUNRISE’s vision is a radical and ambitious scientific and technological effort towards conversion and storage of solar energy for production of fuels and base chemicals. During one year, from March 1st, 2019, we have created the conditions for a large-scale research initiative in the area. Uppsala University is the Swedish Partner and coordinates the work with other Swedish stakeholders.

Expected long term effects

EU has phased out Flagships and the conditions for large-scale support within Horizon Europe (HE) are still unclear. Nevertheless, we see that work has influenced HE where several calls in the area are planned. A call for CSA will give us an opportunity for continued coordination of our work during the next years. Our continuation project SUNERGY I aiming for support within the so-called Partnerships, in the planned second round for 2024.

Approach and implementation

The work in SUNRISE has resulted in a Roadmap and a Blueprint for this technology area, which are made public via the EU Commission, and we have developed a governance model for a large-scale project. An important part of our work has been to assemble stakeholders in different societal sectors. SUNRISE has had 20 Partners from 13 countries, including large companies, research organizations and universities. Swedish participants have had an important role, and has one member in the board for the continuation project SUNERGY.
