Purpose and goal
The overall purpose of SuMo Biomaterials is to strengthen the competitiveness of Swedish industry and the research environments at Chalmers and RISE. SuMo has made excellent research based on industrial challenges. The interdisciplinary research has led to innovations and new collaborations between the partners including company-company interactions. The centre has also developed new ways to working that have resulted in an open atmosphere, common patents and effective methods for knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
Expected results and effects
SuMo has produced 336 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 29 PhDs, 21 licentiates and 13 patents. The centre has performed 65 research projects and 13 knowledge transfer projects, which has involved > 250 persons. The SuMo senior scientists have under the ten-year period generated new research activities for more than 400 MSEK. SuMo has contributed to internationalization by performing 5 scientific conferences and by hosting several guest researchers. This will have long-lasting positive effects on the company innovation capabilities and the academic research.
Planned approach and implementation
SuMo has had a good mix with companies in the sectors pharma, foods, hygiene, wound care, paper and pulp, and packaging, which are non-competitors, and different scientific disciplines within chemistry, physics, mathematics, food science and materials science. This has led to interdisciplinary research projects with participants from different companies and scientific fields. It has also led to an open atmosphere within the centre with shared results and a lot of interaction, which has resulted in research with high quality and new innovations.
