Important results from the project
In order to develop more environmentally and climate-sustainable products than what today´s eco-labeling tools require, the project has demonstrated today´s challenges for companies. Above all, there is no incentive for companies to develop better products and there is no opportunity to differentiate themselves from other ecolabelled products on the market. The detergent formulations are also more expensive as sustainable bio-based and circular raw materials are considerably more expensive than fossil-based today.
Expected long term effects
In order to achieve a system change, the project shows that a combination of different instruments is most likely to be required. Financial instruments together with changing the current eco-labeling instruments by introducing categories based on the environmental and climate impact of the constituent components or introducing standardization with corresponding categories. The options provide opportunities for the grocery stores to promote the best products, and it will be clear to consumers about which products are best for the environment, health and climate.
Approach and implementation
The project has implemented the various work packages according to plan. In particular, the focus has been on the external analysis, development paths of standards and analysis of proposed measures. The project has had reallocations due to changes in resources but it has not affected the project´s implementation and results.
