Purpose and goal
DiSS2 aims to develop and demonstrate a digital solution for monitoring and analyzing the hot rolling of long steel products. By combining cost-effective sensors, such as cameras and IR technology, with physics-based simulation, the project creates a digital “soft sensor” that indirectly calculates material properties and process parameters. This enables real-time detection of deviations e.g. caused by roll wear or incorrect settings, and provides rapid feedback to operators and control systems.
Expected effects and result
The project is expected to develop a robust sensor method that works in an industrial environment and can measure the billet’s dimensions and detect deviations. Data is delivered in real time to the simulation tool RollSim, which automatically updates process parameters and enables continuous simulations during ongoing production. A pilot installation in a rolling mill will be carried out at an industrial partner and will demonstrate the benefits, such as reduced scrap and faster feedback.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is divided into several work packages, which include mapping and development of the sensor system, development and adaptation of RollSim, synchronization between the sensor and RollSim, modeling and deviation analysis, as well as demonstration and evaluation of the sensor method in a production environment.
