Safety Case for Autonomous Trucks

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - Mobility & systems
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 273 000
Project duration October 2020 - September 2022
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The objectives of the project were twofold: Contribute to the safety of automated vehicles by systematically investigating from a legal and technical perspective - how to safely operate remote controlled vehicles in mixed traffic and with higher velocity. Perform tests in fenced areas in order to prepare for a demonstration on public road. A safety case for the traffic environment was thoroughly explored and tested beforehand at AstaZero test site in Sweden. This allowed to really explore limiting parameters and stress testing the boundaries of the system under real conditions.

Expected results and effects

The project´s main focus was on the exploration of the safety case. Based on the designated trial area in Gothenburg, we have selected safety goals and more exploratory test scenarios for testing vehicles functions and connectivity at AstaZero. Together, the parties have developed an improved strategy for an advanced safety argumentation. In our approach, we combined policy lab methodology and an investigation of the technical safety aspects to identify and test the gaps related to automated vehicle road safety.

Planned approach and implementation

The project approach combined policy lab methodology and an investigation of the technical safety aspects to identify gaps related to automated vehicles´ traffic safety, including technical safety aspects and policy challenges. Experiences with systematically exploring safety cases, i.e. to demonstrate an adequate argument for safety, are still low and immature, as safety requirements and standards are not yet fully defined in this field. In terms of policy, we focused on certain policy aspects and if/how they are addressed by national and international legislation.
