Purpose and goal

Designing a safe way to interact with vehicle functions as well as with nomadic devices is a serious challenge. Driver inattention plays a great role in several traffic accidents, however the main focus for research so far has been on visual demand. The RIVER project assessed the actual mental workload while using a speech interface. A contribution to the following sub-program goals was made: Analysis, knowledge and enabling technologies Basic safety features of vehicles Driver support and related interfaces between driver and vehicle as well as interfaces between other road users

Expected results and effects

WP2 have provided 1. A state of the art investigation on voice control in the automotive industry 2. A list of user needs, including how the users are communicating with the truck today 3. What features in the truck would the drivers like to be able to control with voice 4. How can Volvo´s voice control interaction be made more efficient In WP3, a prototype with voice control was implemented in a truck which was evaluated in WP4. A comparison between objective data and data gathered from subjective questionnaires was made in order to evaluate the objective methods.

Planned approach and implementation

WP1 was an administrative WP to structure and prepare the project. WP2 made a state of the art investigation and a user needs investigation to understand what features the users wanted. WP3 then created a prototype based on the results from WP2. WP4 developed a new method for analyzing workload while using voice control and used this method to evaluate the prototype built in WP3.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
