Important results from the project
The goal of the project was "to gain new insights on Reshoring concerning Nordic production and disseminate these to manufacturing firms, policy makers and the research community". This has been achieved. A questionnaire survey has captured extent, drivers, effects, problems and future expectations for both offshoring and reshoring of production and compared these two relocation directions. No less than 373 Swedish plants participated, which resulted in a good response rate of 23 %. Dissemination has been carried out in different ways to the stakeholders mentioned above.
Expected long term effects
The survey has received large interest among manufacturing firms, policy makers and the research community. The results have provided the state-of-the-art of offshoring as well as reshoring, as a benchmark for internal location decisions for the firms. The results have been presented at the PLAN logistics society, Intelligent Logistik, Vinnova, Näringsdepartementet, Tillväxtverket, radio, etc, as well as through a number of research articles. The stakeholders are now better informed about the impact of offshoring and reshoring in a Swedish context.
Approach and implementation
Data was primarily collected through a questionnaire survey concerning offshoring from and reshoring to Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. We have cooperated with researchers in Denmark (Prof. Jan Stentoft, Univ. of Southern Denmark) and Finland (Prof. Miia Martinsou and Prof. Jussi Heikkilä, Tampere Univ. of Tech.). All researchers agree that the cooperation has been very fruitful. Three case studies have also been carried out focussing on the relationship between reshoring and innovations, which have verified the corresponding results of the survey.
