Important results from the project

The project has given us a solid knowledge base about Hus K´s technical, architectural and cultural-historical conditions, while also allowing us to test conversion and reuse at multiple scales – from plan studies to models and 1:1 prototypes. We have thus been able to show that a gradual, resource-efficient and gentle conversion is possible, but also identified the legal, economic and organizational obstacles that today make such processes difficult to implement in practice.

Expected long term effects

In the long term, the project is expected to contribute to a changed view of existing office buildings as a resource, rather than as objects of demolition. It can provide support for new working methods where gradual transformation, site-specific reuse and preservation of existing structures become more obvious options in the early stages.

Approach and implementation

The project’s overall conclusion is that the potential for resource-efficient and sensitive transformation is significant—both in Hus K and in similar office structures—but that it requires revised policy instruments, strong and knowledgeable clients, and a shift in how we understand aesthetics, standards, and what is considered a “finished” dwelling.
