Purpose and goal
The purpose of the pre-study was to increase competence in autonomous vehicles with no safety driver inside, to understand the risks of autonomous testing and also to realize how the proving ground need to develop by processes, rules and surveillance due to maintain the safety on the proving ground.
Expected results and effects
Competence gained during the study has resulted in a supporting document for proving grounds in Europe. The document could be used as an input while creating risk assessments and regulations on automated testing. After a study of a driverless vehicle, the processes for booking, risk analysis and traffic management of AstaZero have been updated. A list of potential development work for example to establish communication between driverless vehicles and traffic control has been created. The prestudy has resulted in a FFI project proposal in collaboration with industry and institutes.
Planned approach and implementation
The pre-study has included practical studies of driverless vehicles and emergency stops, participating in risk assessments and also literature studies. A comparison of driverless and manual driven vehicle has been done to identify need of development in processes, regulations and surveillance. AstaZero has also created and moderated a workgroup consisting of other proving grounds and eminent clients in automated testing.
