Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme Electronic Components and Systems:

Purpose and goal

The purpose has been to develop sensor technology for load optimization in transformer stations in the electricity grid and to enable databased predictive maintenance. The goal was to develop fiber optic technology for temperature monitoring in high-voltage bushings. This has been fulfilled and the technology has been verified through integration in full-scale prototypes and a field trial in the grid. A manufacturing process for the integration of fiber in the product has also been developed as well as a plan for further work towards commercialization.

Expected results and effects

Technology for temperature measurement inside high voltage components has been developed. It is electrically compatible and can be integrated in the manufacturing process. This enables new possibilities and there are already plans to further develop the technology for larger bushings and for the development of new types of integrated sensors. The development continues with Hitachi ABB Power Grids, for an integration in their products, which is part of their strategy for digitization.

Planned approach and implementation

The project was a collaboration between three industrial parties, Västbergslagens Elnät, Hitachi ABB Power Grids and Lemont, as well as two parts of the institute RISE, Fiber Optics and Sicomp. The development involved mainly Hitachi ABB and Rise. Hitachi ABB contributed with the manufacturing technology and steered the development towards the product and manufacturing requirements. Rise has been responsible for expertise in fiber optics and composites. VB Elnät provided end-user perspective and hosted the field trial. Lemont was involved in the production of prototypes.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
