Important results from the project
In high-temperature work, goals were achieved: FBGS matured manufacturing methods and evaluated surface treatments. Saab noted fragility but specimens performed well in environmental testing. In "endless multiplexing," understanding of low-loss sensor fiber manufacturing improved. Challenges remain in handling many measurement points.
Expected long term effects
The project between Saab and FBGS has created several long-term effects. The gained knowledge in fiber optic sensors for high temperatures and "endless multiplexing" will help continue planned R&D project for Saab. The collaboration has strengthened the relationship between the companies and laid the foundation for possible future collaborations
Approach and implementation
The project was carried out in collaboration with the German company FBGS. The goal was to develop and mature fiber optic sensors for multi-sensor systems and high-temperature sensors for avionics, with a focus on environmental robustness. Reoccurring meetings were held to for requirements, research, development, and testing. FBGS improved manufacturing processes, while Saab contributed its expertise in avionics and system testing. The collaboration has laid the foundation for future projects.
